A youthful demographic structure is crucial for national progress and power. Given Iran’s significant decline in fertility rates and population growth, this study investigates how television drama programs can encourage families to increase their number of children. Employing a qualitative research design, semi-structured interviews were conducted with seventeen purposively sampled experts, including television drama producers, media and cultural specialists, family counselors, psychologists, and obstetricians/gynecologists, until theoretical saturation was reached. Data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis involving transcription, open and axial coding, and identification of thematic categories. The findings consolidate into five key content policy recommendations for television drama production aimed at promoting fertility: 1) highlighting the benefits of large families (e.g., portraying sibling cooperation in child-rearing); 2) demonstrating the disadvantages of small families (e.g., depicting challenges in old-age care); 3) minimizing emphasis on the difficulties of childbearing (e.g., avoiding portrayals of parent-child conflicts); 4) correcting misconceptions about family and fertility (e.g., addressing beliefs about voluntary abortion); and 5) promoting an Iranian-Islamic lifestyle while critiquing Western cultural influences (e.g., reviving subcultures supportive of increased fertility). These identified content policies offer practical guidance for leveraging television drama to address national demographic challenges and encourage higher fertility rates.
